I recently signed up as an Author in Ezine and my first 7 articles were approved after 4 days..And now that I'm allowed to submit more, I'm writing round the clock!(because aside from Ezine, there are other deadlines to beat!)

For many people spending a little while still having a joyous and nice holiday season is imperative. The good news is, there are a lot of things that you and your family can enjoy even with little or no money at all.

Moreover, fully enjoying the holiday season does not really mean that we should use up a lot of money, right? Christmas season can be so much happier if you know what its true spirit and meaning.

At any rate, here are some activities that you can do with friends and family without spending so much. All of these may also give a new perspective for everybody on the truest meaning of Christmas.

1. Try a Christmas light tour

Assemble your family, go out, and feast your eyes at all the Christmas lights out there. And if you happen to know about the “Policarpio Street” in Mandaluyong, that’s the best place where you can go.

For sure, the Policarpio Street is fully ablaze in Yuletide colors by now. You will find rows of brilliantly lit houses in this charming neighborhood. It continues to draw tourists, people from out of town, neighbors, and carolers.

An evening stroll here will leave you in awe and your senses will be assaulted by all things Christmas. Common sights are the Santa in different poses, sparkling lights and lanterns, and the heart of it all, the magnificent Belen or the Nativity scene.

Truly, whether the place is just in the neighborhood or in other part of the town, this activity can be an enjoyable one…and most of all, it’s free!

2. Christmas party

If you can’t let the holiday season go by without a party, then have one. But try to keep it simple especially if your budget is quite limited. What’s more, even if you are the host, you do not have to provide everything for the party. All of the party goers can share something for all of you to enjoy, food and drinks alike. Besides, the reason for the Christmas party is merely the chance for a get-together, to be with family and friends. Have a festive theme and remember, exchange gifts should be optional.

3. Give back

Share or do something for our less fortunate brothers and sisters. You can give gifts or volunteer to help out in Christmas programs like fund-raising or community works (especially now that there are still so many families who are homeless due to the past typhoons like ondoy and peping).

In this missionary work, you will not just brighten up other people’s day but you will also sow hope that will help them to get on with their lives. On your part, knowing that you have made others happy, your Christmas experience will be more fulfilling and blessed too.

Finally, Christmas doesn’t have to be about the amount of cash we spend, or how lavish the parties are. But it should be about spending time with all the people that we care about, or sharing what we have to others. A thrifty or even a free way to celebrate Christmas doesn’t mean that it’s less, but rather it can also bring some of the most meaningful experiences in this holiday season.

September 26, 2009, Saturday. Typhoon Ondoy hit the Philippines, it was so strong that it had left behind great damages to both lives and properties. The impact of the typhoon was so unexpected that many people were caught unprepared. Furthermore, it was even said that Ondoy was greater that the hurricane Katrina that had struck New Orleans a few years back.

Flashback

September 24, 2009. Thursday. I submitted one set of assignment at Essays.ph cyber office and got another one about loans. So, what is essays.ph cyber office, you ask? Well, Essays. Ph or EPH is a premiere online writing company that continuously hires home-based freelance writers in order to meet the demands of their numerous clients.

September 25, after 24 hours, I failed to submit my articles because my internet connection was not good (probably because of the looming bad weather)

Flashback (more than a year ago)

Back in August 2008, as I was browsing the internet for possible online business, I came across an ad which says something like “ writer ka ba? “ I said to myself, I’ll give it a shot, besides there’s nothing to lose and if I can get in, then that’s better!

I registered in the forums (the first forum I’ve ever joined in) and there I met a few hopefuls. I said “hopefuls” since that particular forum is like a place where you can hang out while you wait for your application to be approved. After 2 weeks of waiting, from black team, I was transferred to green team which means, this is the day that I’ve been waiting for! I can finally grab assignments!

How I got in? Essays.ph requires every applicant to submit 2 interesting 500 words articles. After submission, you’ll have to wait for a few days since they still have to review the articles. Meanwhile, I found out I was accepted when the next time I logged in the forums, I was already with the green team. I was really excited, it’s just like winning the lotto...haha! (no exaggeration there!)... I was so happy that I can’t take away that smile on my face (which remained pasted for a few more days). J

When I started taking assignments, I just realized that essays.ph is not a scam after all. Contrary to what some people say, it is not a scam. I earned my first 300 points (pesos) by writing an article about UK watches! I still clearly remember that day. With the excitement on top of the will to beat the 24 hour deadline, the experience was quite exhilarating, really.

You might say that the rest is history, well yes, the rest is history.

On the other hand, do you know that it’s not just the assignments that kept me from coming back to the cafeteria? (as we fondly call our very own forum) So, what is it? Aside from the assignments, I’ve gained many friends!

I just couldn’t forget the times when we used to have a conference (via yahoo messenger), it was so much fun chatting with my co-writers or should I say “friends.” We chat even when we have pending assignments and we hang out in the cafeteria (longer than necessary). I miss those days…

We’ve gotten so close that the desire to meet one another was overwhelming. We finally set a date to meet up in Megamall. That initial meeting led to another meet-up in MOA and a month after, we had our very first EPH Christmas (milk) party which was a success.

Back to the future

September 27, 2009, Sunday. I’ve attempted to submit my overdue assignment since electricity was back to normal, but then, the internet was still out. I even tried to find an internet shop where I can go online (despite the flood and rain) but to no avail.

The next day, September 28, Monday, PLDT informed us that the internet will resume after a week due to the extent of the damage. Upon hearing that, I said to myself...what?! one week?!..one week without assignment?!..Oh no!

But God is good, the next day September 29, I finally uploaded my articles. It was a relief.

Finally, maybe you are wondering why I had mentioned about the typhoon, what’s the connection? Well, that was to show how much I love and treasured being with Essays.ph. How much I am proud to be part of the team, that through thick and thin, rain or shine, not even a big storm can be a barrier. As long as EPH is still there, I’ll keep on writing.

Truly, being with EPH is one of the things that I had prayed for in the past and I considered it as a real blessing as I was able to save up some money through my earnings. Most importantly, I have gained so many friends.

Essays.ph had celebrated its first anniversary last Aug. 2009 and I Know it will continue to count more years because of the kind people behind it coupled with talented staff and cool writers!

I just realized that it's almost 3 mos. since I posted my last blog..Well, perhaps I'm kind of busy. When I have decided to take blogging seriously, I said to myself that I have to post at least twice a week but it's either I'm really busy or just plain lazy to post anything.
Anyway, I have at least 8 saved blogs that still need to be edited before it is presentable enough to be published but when I was reading them, the thought of just abandoning those entries hit my mind. So, my final decision is to simply write a new one, besides those drafts are so old already. Now I'm thinking of just summarizing everything and then write them all in one simple entry( I hope I can do this! ) let's just wait and see! haha!

Another day at the pond...
My son loves to come here because he's thrilled with catching fish and the ride by the boat never fails to excite him.
I usually wake up late, but today I got up earlier as we set out to walk by the pond. And hey! it's valentine's day today...a nice early walk would not be that bad. And besides, it's fun to watch li'l Nick have fun as he stroll and shriek at the sight of the fishes as it goes up the surface to eat the pieces of bread that he had thrown as bait. A fine morning indeed, it was tiring but I had fun with Nick.

The Obama Inauguration

I’m sleepy from staying up all night watching Barack Obama’s inauguration live on television. That night, I can hardly keep my eyes on the laptop screen while typing my article which is due the next morning. I stayed glued to the history that is unfolding before me, before millions of people around the world. The next day, I just can’t help watching and listening again to Obama’s speeches being replayed on You tube while I struggle to keep my heavy head from falling into my laptop’s keyboard. (I also have to finish the article that I have set aside the previous night)

But a never to be repeated history was being made late Tuesday (Manila time, Wednesday in Washington), and staying up till 3 am seems a small price to pay to be a part of it. I’m not much into politics, but Barack Obama incites something in me that I can’t quite explain…

He’s only 48 and his speech reverberates with the voice of a lost generation, effervescent with optimism and pulsating with promise.

Even though I’m so far away, the American way of life touches my family in a lot of ways than one as some of my relatives and dear friends reside there, some in Texas, New Jersey, Guam and Washington, where the inauguration took place and where Obama and his family will stay throughout his term.

Whatever good this vibrant new American president will do for his own country should benefit not just his fellow American citizen but also the millions of people who left their homelands in search for a greener pasture in the US.

And as naïve as this may seem, by leading through example, Obama could be successful in bringing together other world leaders for the common good, thus making this world a safer and better place to live in.
